Low and High Risk Obstetrics Q & A
What is a low-risk pregnancy?
Most pregnancies are considered low-risk, meaning there are no factors or complications likely to threaten the health or safety of the mother or baby. Dr. Tajzoy provides obstetric services for many low-risk pregnancies in the Dallas area.
Even without pre-existing risk factors, it’s a good idea to have an expert obstetrician on your birth team. Dr. Tajzoy can assist in case of unexpected emergencies during pregnancy, labor, or delivery.
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
High-risk pregnancies involve increased risk of health problems to the mother or baby before, during, or after childbirth. A pregnancy may be considered high risk for several different reasons, such as:
- Mother has pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes
- Mother develops a condition during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia
- Mother has a history of pregnancy problems, such as multiple miscarriages
- Complications arise during pregnancy, such as premature labor
- Developing fetus shows signs of health problems
- Mother is carrying twins or higher order multiples
However, just because you have a high-risk pregnancy doesn’t mean there will be a problem. Complications only occur in about 6-8% of all pregnancies, but when they do occur, pregnancy complications can be serious. Dr. Tajzoy has extensive experience in managing the full spectrum of high-risk pregnancies.
What steps can I take to encourage a healthy pregnancy?
Whether you know you’ll have a high-risk pregnancy ahead of time or not, Dr. Tajzoy works with you to ensure the most successful outcome.
If you’re not yet pregnant, it’s a good idea to schedule a preconception counseling appointment. Dr. Tajzoy discusses lifestyle changes that promote a healthy pregnancy, such as healthy eating and nutritional supplements.
For women who already know they’re pregnant, routine prenatal care is essential. Dr. Tajzoy monitors the health of you and your developing baby during regularly scheduled prenatal visits.
In cases of high-risk pregnancy, Dr. Tajzoy may recommend additional tests to check for signs of potential problems. Depending on your unique situation, this may include ultrasound imaging tests or lab tests.
If you’re pregnant or want to become pregnant, call the office of Emil Tajzoy, MD, or book an appointment online today.
